In a recent biography of J. C. Ryle, the author challenges the popular notion that Holiness is Ryle’s magnum opus. That epithet, he maintains, along with many others, is reserved for Knots Untied. We think, however, this question is premised on a false dilemma.
Ryle prepared these two volumes, as well as Old Paths and Practical Religion, to be read as companions, not competitors. And when viewed from this angle, they will be seen as Ryle’s practical divinity: each volume expounding the faith from a different perspective than the others. Speaking broadly, Holiness is to the Christian disciple what Knots Untied is to the Christian church-member. While the edge on Holiness cuts to the heart, the blade on Knots is applied to the pulpit and pew—and maybe a few knaves. Both publications are equally brilliant: all four titles deserve identical honors.
Comparisons aside, on one point there is no debate: Holiness is quite simply profound—it is a life-changing book. Each page penetrates, searches, reveals, and convicts. Would God that all the Lord’s people understood these truths!
So it is our great joy to publish the first unabridged version of Holiness in decades, if not since the original. As with the preceding volumes, we have made the following changes: (1) obsolete punctuation has been modified, though Ryle’s form has not been altered (he intended his works to be read out loud); (2) letters and numbers denoting outlines have been made consistent; (3) supplemental footnotes have been inserted, symbols marking Ryle’s annotations, numerals the publisher’s; (4) an index of Scripture has been provided.
We now pray God, the Lord Our Righteousness, will use this book to strengthen the gates of Zion, that His people may worship Him in the beauty of holiness for ages to come.
